h.takahashi, tokyo based architect and sound designer follows up his revered collection where to be? on where to now? records with raum, a full length lp suite of meditative pulse minimalism. raum draws its cues from a melting pot of closely connected yet wholly individual strands of minimalism - from the japanese minimalist works from the likes of hiroshi yoshimura and satoshi ashikawa, to masters such as erik satie and john cage, and ambient leaders brian eno and roedelius, takahashi soaks this historical influence and rings it out it through a modern filter to create a record of stillness, ethereal beauty, and transcendent energy. takahashi composes all of his music on his iphone, and this is no gimmick, rather a conscious decision which allows takahashi to constantly create on the go without the constraints of space, and for takahashi raum serves as a mediation on the relationship between sound and its environment. for takahashi this creative process feels something like an invisible phenomenon taking over & mutating these constantly changing spaces into abstract sound, creating a brief pseudo space which expresses and highlights the features of the environment for a moment in time.” although perhaps quite an abstract statement of intent, when deeply immersed into takahashi’s pieces this idea of slowly gliding through different architectural spaces is naturally conjured through the gentle repetitive pulse which runs through his work and the playful unstructured tonality of objects which weave around this forward (or upward) motion. raum was created across the city of tokyo, be it a café / park / office / road / platform / subway these pieces explore the power sound holds to emotionally enhance and mutate the listeners environment. the power of the music presented is in that which is barely there, embracing space, silence, and cyclical repetition. the music is to help us function - it s music to work to, to sleep to, to help us find a sense of space and oneness within a world that is increasingly wild and untameable.

drumcode continues its commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge techno. with releases this year already from adam beyer, pig&dan, alan fitzpatrick, dense & pika and julian jeweil, this july sees the return of enrico sangiuliano with astral projection. after his remix of mobys of why does my heart feel so bad back in november last year, enrico sought creative inspiration from his travels, transcending that into his productions and long studio sessions during the winter months. the result brings a mind and body melting release from the italian producer. the title track astral projection is a captivating, big room techno masterpiece. deep reverberations punch alongside a sinisterly crisp percussive drive. launching into a groove laden synth modulation of low end textures, it breaks down into an ethereal amalgamation of pads and synths before the vocal launches, taking this track to another level. ‘blooming era has destructive dancefloor intent. there is no holding back with the low end synth modulation which enrico has mastered to perfection. a tightly woven percussive flare moulds flawlessly with the rolling oscillations of the beast of this track. if you have seen label head honcho adam beyer playing anywhere on the globe in the last 5 months, this has been a peak time favourite. road-tested to the max, and with much success.

before there was a man in black, there were the sun records years, when cash began defining his peculiar and witty version of country music. born in arkansas in 1932, cash began recording as a top artist for sun records, for which he released his first full-length lp. this double lp set documents all the hits from 1955 to 1958, before cash signed to columbia records. these 35 “first steps” helped build the legend and are considered the milestones of an incredible career that ended with those passionate and soulful albums on the “american recordings” series released between 1994 and 2003, the year jr cash died on sept 12.

its been a year or two since we featured a 12- single release from a new project. so hear at bearfunk we are really pleased to be releasing a cracker of a track. -gong bong-. it is from the caribbean house who are a new(ish) italian collective based around the core members of billy bogus & ferderico bologna. the original is one part slo-mo disco, one part psychedelic moondance and one part sci-fi horror movie. the track begins with swirling bass guitar and grinding synth before layering on a waft of sound effects and spooky keys. if the first two thirds of the track is a caterpillar then the last third is a butterfly as uplifting riffs and swirls of layered keys bring things to a crescendo. fellow italians the mushrooms project are up on remix duty first of all. they strip back the layers and concentrate on the growling bass and locked on pulsating synth. its back to the uk for the second remix where label honcho stevie kotey gets his percussion out for a drum, timpani and swing remix. stay tuned for more from the collective on bearfunk shortly.
